As a department our aims are to ensure that all students:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

At Key Stage 4 students can opt to follow either the Computer Science or ICT programme of study. The majority of students receive five 60 minute lessons a fortnight of their chosen subject. During this time they work towards achieving either the Edexcel GCSE Computer Science or AQA GCSE ICT qualification.

The Edexcel GCSE Computer Science qualification is made up of two assessment components, details of which are listed below;

  • Paper Based Assessment: Principles of Computer Science (90 marks) 2 hour exam, worth 75% of the total GCSE
  • Controlled Assessment: Practical Programming (50 marks) May take place over multiple sessions up to a combined duration of 15 hours, worth 25% of the total GCSE

The AQA GCSE ICT qualification is made up of three units, details of which are listed below;

  • Unit 1- Systems and Applications in ICT (120 marks) 1 hour 30 minutes exam, worth 40% of marks
