BTEC LEVEL 1/LEVEL 2 TECH AWARD IN PERFORMING ARTS (Dance)


Course Description:

The Dance Course allows you to develop your interest and skills in a range of Dance styles. You will complete 3 Components

Component 1 – Developing skills and techniques (internal assessment)

You will develop dancing skills through rehearsals/masterclasses and present finished work in front of a live audience.

Component 2- Exploring the Performing Arts

You will investigate:

  • 1.A range of different performance styles (Ballet, Jazz, Musical theatre , Tap, contemporary, Commercial etc.)
  • 2.Respected dance practitioners ‘methods’
  • 3.Performance roles, skills and responsibilities within the performing arts Industry.

These skills, techniques and knowledge will be showcased within a piece of devised dance in front of a live audience.

Component 3 - Performing to a brief (external assessment)

Students will work with groups of 3-7 members to create a dance performance based on a set scenario from the exam board.

Assessment:

Components 1 and 2 are assessed by your teacher and verified both internally and externally. Component 3 is externally assessed. Written work is kept to the minimum to mirror ‘dance school training, and assessments of performances, rehearsals and practice sessions make up your assessment portfolio.

Skills developed:

  • Composition and choreography skills in groups and in solo work
  • Dance Technique in a range of styles
  • How to plan, organise and rehearse for a live dance performance event
  • To implement dance practitioner skills and techniques
  • You will also develop confidence, presentation, organisational and creative skills.

Progression Routes at post 16

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Musical Theatre/Acting/Dance

Possible careers related to this subject:

Dancing, teaching, theatre, leisure industry and dance therapy, Media, T.V, Film and journalism.

The skills developed in dance also benefit members of other professions such as teachers, lawyers and managers who regularly have to demonstrate confidence and creativity when speaking in front of others, giving presentations or solving problems.

Haydock Curriculum

Over the last few years we have been successful in achieving Sportsmark, Investors in People, Artsmark, Careers and Guidance and Healthy Schools accreditation. We were also awarded the accolade of a ‘Get Set’ school in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics.

Haydock Leisure Centre

Facilities With a £250,000 refurbishment in 2006, the PE department and Leisure Centre were refurbished to accommodate more people and classes, offering a wide range of activities to students and the wider community. The changing rooms are of a high standard with disabled access, automatic showers and private cubicles. Sports Hall The Sports Hall can accommodate the following: 5 a side football, whole Sports Hall Cricket, whole Sports Hall Badminton, whole or half Sports Hall Keep Fit and much more.
